What is the standard size of a runner rug?

Most runner rugs in Australia come in three sizes:
-80cm x 300cm
-80cm x 400cm
-80cm x 500cm

They’re designed to fit a conventional hallway in width, with different lengths available to suit any home. Runner rugs are also available in wider varieties for homes with spacious hallways.

How much of a hallway should a runner cover?

As a rule of thumb, there should always be at least 10cm of floor visible on either side of a runner rug. Thankfully, most runner rugs commercially produced account for this space in a conventionally-sized hallway.

For wider hallways, choose a wider rug that leaves around 15cm of floor space on each side. As far as length goes, you should aim for a rug that’s equal to or slightly shorter than the length of your hallway.

How do you keep a hallway runner in place?

In heavy foot-traffic areas, hallway rugs have a tendency to slip from one side to another, which can be unsightly. If you’re getting tired of constantly repositioning your rug to the centre, you could consider purchasing a non-slip rug pad to help secure it into place.

These pads are usually made from PVC, which grips both the fibres in a rug and the floor surface. Simply cut out a sheet of grip pad that’s slightly smaller than the size of your rug and place it on the ground to stop your hallway runner from moving around too much.
