Are cotton or wool rugs better?

When deciding on a rug to buy, you’ll be wise to consider the fibre used to make it. Cotton and wool are two common rug types, and both have their own pros and cons.
-Cotton fibre: Cotton is a natural fibre that’s a more affordable alternative to wool. It’s soft on the feet but doesn’t have the pile strength to hold up for years in the way a wool rug might.
-Wool fibre: Wool is a great yarn for rugs but it’s often the most expensive fibre. It’s both soft and durable but is more prone to shedding than cotton rugs are.

Are cotton rugs durable?

Cotton is soft, natural and easily dyed, making it a popular choice for rug making. With maintenance, a good-quality cotton rug will last many years before it needs to be replaced.

However, given the soft fibres of cotton, it’s sometimes not advised to have your cotton rug in a place with heavy foot traffic. Cotton rugs may be more appropriate under a coffee table or in the bedroom, where they won’t be overused.

How do you clean a cotton rug?

Cotton rugs should be cleaned regularly to remove any stains and keep them in top condition. Here are three steps to follow when cleaning your cotton rug:
1. Clear away dust and pet hair: Using a high-powered vacuum cleaner or dense brush, remove any dirt, dust or debris from your rug.
2. Spot clean: Use baking soda or a mild detergent with a coarse brush to remove any stains from your rug.
3. Deep clean: If your manufacturer will allow it, place small cotton rugs in your washing machine on a cold, gentle cycle. If your rug is larger, scrub your rug down with warm water and baking soda and rinse, or consult a professional cleaner.
