What is special about a Dutch oven?

While the words may seem similar, these two things could not be any more different. A dutch oven is a medium-sized pot with a lid that can either be used on the stovetop or in the oven. It does not generate heat like a regular oven does, but rather requires an additional heat source to work.

When it comes to cooking bread, for example, a regular oven might do the trick, but a preheated dutch oven placed back into a regular oven will generate even high heat and lock in moisture, aiding the rising and crusting processes.

What is a casserole pan used for?

Much like its name suggests, casserole pans were originally used for casseroles. Other uses of a casserole pan are for slow cooking meats, stews, bakes and anything else you can think of.

Casserole pans are versatile as they can go from the stovetop to the oven, allowing you to sear off meat and vegetables before braising them in stock or wine in the oven.
