Where should exterior lights be placed?

Lighting outdoor areas presents a unique set of challenges, and if you’re looking at installing ceiling lights on your verandah, balcony, covered deck, porch or patio, you’ll probably be wondering how best to place them.

Most people will opt for one or two durable outdoor oyster lights for their outside space, spaced evenly apart at least a metre away from any walls or edges. Single lights are most often placed either directly in the centre of the ceiling or slightly toward the edge furthest away from the house.

What colour light is best for outdoors?

The colour temperature you choose for outdoors is important for both illuminating your space and creating a nice ambience for relaxing and socialising.

Cool lighting is often chosen to compliment a modern home exterior, whilst warm lighting may look more appropriate alongside a brick wall or older style of house. At the end of the day, the colour of your outdoor ceiling lights will come down to personal preference, as there are no strict rules for the colour temperature that looks best outdoors.
