How many downlights do you need per room?

Different rooms in the home are lit differently according to what they’re used for. How many downlights you may require will depend on what room of the house you’re in, as well as the lumen (lm) output of the lights you choose. For example, a bathroom typically requires 500lm per square metre, while a bedroom only needs 180. If your bathroom is 9m2, you’ll need 4,500lm in your space (lumens required x metres squared). Given most downlights are around 900-1,000lm, your bathroom will require around five downlights.

Where should downlights be placed in a bedroom?

When it comes to your bedroom, downlights can be arranged in a multitude of ways. Usually, downlights are installed at least a metre away from the wall and evenly spaced out, allowing 1.5-2m between each light. In a bedroom, there’s more flexibility as in most cases the visibility doesn’t need to be particularly strong. Opt for fewer downlights, or consider placing them closer to the walls rather than the centre of the room to create shadows.

Which colour LED light is best for the bedroom?

Lighting in your bedroom should encourage sleep and a relaxed atmosphere. This means that, at least before going to bed, it should be dim to allow your body to produce enough natural melatonin to bring you to a state of rest. In general, warm-toned lights are best for the bedroom as your eyes are less sensitive to them than they are to cool lights.
