What is a compost bin and how does it work?

A kitchen compost bin is simply one part of a composting system, which extends to your backyard or composting centre. Your organic food scraps from cooking, such as fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells and coffee grounds go into your countertop compost bin until they’re ready to be taken to the outdoor compost to decompose, rather than going to landfill.

Kitchen compost bins should be made out of a non-porous material, such as porcelain or metal, for easier clean up between disposals. Air holes on your compost bin lid are also necessary to allow the material to properly decompose.

What is the best type of waste bin to use in a kitchen?

When it comes to waste, everyone has their own way of doing things. Some prefer to keep their waste bin hidden under the sink, and others have a separate corner in the kitchen for it. Here are some of the different types of bins available to you, to help you decide what’s best:

-Pedal bin: This classic style of waste bin is opened with a foot pedal.
-Touch bin: This bin requires you to touch a trigger on the top for the lid to open.
-Flip bin: Flip bins have a lid that flips open on a hinge.
-Built-in bin: These bins are fitted to your bottom cabinet drawers.
