How do I choose the right-sized chandelier?

Chandeliers come in a range of sizes, from small and delicate to large and extravagant. The most appropriately sized chandelier will suit the room it’s in, meaning it’s not too large or small for your space.

Talking generally, a chandelier should be allowed at least a few metres of clearance on each side. Avoid pieces that will overwhelm the room or drop too low by measuring the size of your room before you start shopping. If your room is 8x5m with high ceilings, you might consider a piece that’s around 1m in width. For a small 4x4 room, something between 40-60cm will look best.

How far should a chandelier hang over a table?

When it comes to hanging chandeliers over tables, there’s some wiggle room given people won’t be walking under the light fixture.

As a general rule, your chandelier will look best hung halfway between the ceiling and the top of your table. So, if you have a standard 90cm high dining table and 2.5m ceilings, your chandelier should hang around 80cm from the ceiling. This means that the centre of your chosen chandelier will be an equal length from both the surface of the table and the ceiling.
