How to choose ceiling lights
Ceiling lighting is one of the most effective ways to light up a room. What you choose to install in your home will come down to your personal needs and preferences as well as your ceiling’s height. As a general rule, the bottom of your ceiling light shouldn’t hang lower than 2 metres off the ground, unless it’s placed over a table.
There are many different options for ceiling lights, including:
-Pendants
-Batten fix lights
-Spotlights
-Oyster lights
-Chandeliers
-Downlights
-Track lights
-Panel lights
What are recessed ceiling lights?
Unlike pendant or batten light fittings, recessed lights are installed directly inside a ceiling or wall. They are typically hard to detect unless on, and usually come in a row.
These light fixtures comprise three parts: the housing, trim and bulb. The housing is what sits inside your ceiling or wall and isn’t visible on the outside. The trim and the bulb are visible, and can vary in shape and appearance.
Recessed lights are commonly used in bathrooms, hallways and kitchens, or in modern living and dining rooms.
How to layout ceiling lights
The layout of your ceiling lights will depend on what kind of lighting fixture you’ll be installing in your home.
For larger lights, such as chandeliers, pendants and oyster lights, you might consider placing them either in the center of a room or above a piece of furniture, such as a dining table.
Recessed or downlights are a different story. To start, it’s suggested that you avoid the outer 60cm of your ceiling to avoid creating shadows. The lights should be evenly spaced apart in a line or grid pattern depending on your room.
