The difference between bedside table and nightstand
The terms nightstand and bedside table can be used interchangeably, but if we’re being technical, there are a few differences between the two. Bedside tables
Bedside tables can refer to any small side tables that are placed next to a bed. They may have drawers, or may not. Generally speaking, they serve the function of supporting lamps and other bedroom or personal accessories.Nightstands
Historically, nightstands referred to tables with drawers or storage for next to the bed. Nowadays, nightstands and bedside tables are regarded to be the same thing. Can bedside tables be lower or higher than the bed?
Traditional design principles suggest that bedside tables and nightstands should be about the same height as your mattress. This is because with a bedside table too low or high, you may have difficulty reaching your personal items. It’s also recommended that your bedside table not extend 60cm from the wall, so it doesn’t hamper your getting out of bed efforts. However, if you don’t mind reaching over a bit further, you could purchase bedside tables that are slightly shorter than the height of your bed.
Can you only have one bedside table?
For symmetry, if your bed is placed in the middle of the room, it’s recommended that you have two bedside tables. However, if your bed is against a wall, it’s more appropriate to have one bedside table, on the side that isn’t against the wall. Rules aside, how many bedside tables you have is up to you. If you’re unphased by a lack of symmetry, or simply only have the need for one nightstand, one table may be the perfect number for your bedroom.
