What is a wall light?

It’s in the name, wall lights are simply lightly that sit on the wall rather than the ceiling. Interior wall lights may be used for decorative or practical purposes, such as lighting up a hallway.

There are a few different type of wall lights, including:
-Wall sconces: Coming in a range of ornamental styles, these lights protrude from the wall and typically face up or down.
-Bunker lights: Bunker lights are typically seen outdoors, and are built to be weather resistant.
-Recessed lights: These lights are built into the wall and usually point a soft light downwards.
-Vanity lights: Most often found in a bathroom, vanity lights are usually vertically long in shape.

Do they need to be earthed?

Earth wires conduct electricity from a faulty light through the wire to the earth rather than electrocuting you. In Australia, some lights require an earth wire, and others don’t.

For wall lights that are made from non-conductive materials such as plastic, glass or ceramic, an earth connection is not required, as the risk of electrocution is low.

Wall lights with a metal exterior must be earthed, as the material conducts electricity, to prevent any accidents from occuring.

Are wall lights old fashioned?

Although the term ‘wall sconce’ may ring alarm bells in some people’s heads, there’s nothing old fashioned about them. Many interior designers use wall lights as a modern and fashionable way to light up a room, with some even serving well for functionality.

Nowadays, wall sconces come in a range of styles and materials, from waverly lights to globe lights. Recessed wall lights are also a contemporary option, offering a minimalist aesthetic.
