An exciting world opened up in the 1500s. Nations fought and realigned. The known globe slowly filled in. At AM we offer four globes spanning four centuries of cartography from the Renaissance to the Colonial era. They are by themselves living documents of the Age of Discovery.

All globes are handmade from specially reproduced paper gores. Twelve sections are hand glued onto a plastic (small) or paper-mache (large) sphere. Every globe is a masterwork, a combination of superior technology from the era and the artistic drawing skills of a European cartographer. Attention to detail is key. AM replicates the complicated gravure printing process, resulting in the sharpest lines, words, and symbols even on the smallest size globe. Centuries ago globes were made by gluing copperplate printed gores on a plaster finished papier-mache core. This application method continues at AM. All AM globes are made using original charts from important European archive collection originals. Our globes offer history at your fingertips and highlight some of the worlds most famous cartographers: Mercator, Hondius, Vaugondy.

Uniting precious bronze with hardwood and hand applied paper gores on a papier-mache core. Legendary cartographer, Jodocus Hondius, worked in Amsterdam during the 1600s, then one of the world’s commercial hubs. Galleons sailing oceans to the farthest corners of the then known world. Exotic cultures, languages, people and goods to be traded, bought and sold. Gold and ivory, spices and silks. Spin the world and enjoy a touch of true history.

Twelve paper gores applied to the globe are printed after originals drawn by Gerardus Mercator, the inventor of the Mercator projection, which was used from the 16th century until the middle of the 20th century.
